Computer Registration and IP address assignment

Instructions to register new systems with the School of Physics inventory and obtain an IP address.

The School of Physics Support Team strongly suggests that any computer and or peripheral purchases are made in consultation with us. This will automate the process of registering your computer in our inventory and also obtaining an IP address in one of the School's wired networks.

Inventory Registration Information

All computer equipment purchased at the School of Physics must be registered with the IT support Team. If you choose to purchase a system on your own (which is not recommended), it is your responsibility to submit the following information to support@physics.gatech.edu:

  1. Manufacturer Name
  2. Model Number
  3. Serial Number
  4. Hardware Information: CPU type and speed, HDD Size, Memory Size
  5. MAC Address (a.k.a Hardware address) for all network cards in the computer (including wireless). Make sure to specify whether the MAC address belongs to a wireless device.
  6. Operating system installed, e.g. Linux (specify flavor), Mac OS X, Windows (specify version and architecture, e.g. Vista 64 bit), Solaris 10, etc.
  7. Room location (For systems which will go out of campus, please list your office as the room location).
Please notice that you are required to have a valid Windows License (a COA sticker affixed to your computer represents proper licensing) in order to be able to use the campus upgrades to run any windows operating system available from the OIT software download page

IP Address assignment requirements

Prior to being assigned an IP address, a GT owned machine must be registered with us. For all systems being connected to the School's networks, proof must be shown that the systems have:

  • Current virus scan protection for Windows and Mac installed (recommended but not required for Linux). Software is available from OIT software download page. For non GT owned systems, ClamAV/ClamXav, FreeAVG or similar software is acceptable.
  • Firewall software installed and properly configured or proof that your computer is not offering any network services.
  • Proof that your operating system is current (not running an unsupported OS like Fedora Core 1 or Red Hat 7, etc) and has the latest updates installed.

IMPORTANT: You must always notify the School of Physics Support Team prior to moving your computer to a different office or changing the Operating system (e.g From Windows to Linux or vice versa). This will ensure that we have an accurate inventory and will allow us to locate your machine if necessary. The Support Team has the right to remove the IP address assigned to your computer if we cannot find the machine in the proper location.

Machines for use outside of Georgia Tech

For any machine which will be used outside of the Georgia Tech campus (e.g. laptops), you will also need to complete an file an equipment loan agreement form at the Chair's Office front desk. Make sure to always include a copy of your sales receipt with this form. This form is necessary for insurance purposes.
